Time Toast

The General Objective number seven for the Primary Education in Andalusia establishes “to value the foreign language and languages in general as a way of communication between people from different nationalities and origins, developing a positive attitude through multilingual and multicultural diversity integrated in our community”. Attending to this, I would introduce my students one of the most important and famous American authors in children´s literature, Dr. Seuss.

As we celebrate Book´s Day on 23rd April because of the anniversary of the death of Cervantes and Shakespeare, in United States of America, “Read Across America” is celebrated on 2nd March, and it started to honour the birthday date of Dr. Seuss.

In order to connect the General Objectives with the use of Time Toast, I would mention the objective number 5 “to learn how to use with progressive autonomy all the resources within their reach, including new technologies to obtain information and to communicate in the foreign language”.

Saying this, I would be able to set the following learning objectives inside the classroom:

§  To learn about English literature.

§  To bring American culture to the class.

§  To provide my students with practical use of technology.

§  To practice and use English in a meaningful and motivating way.

My students enjoy each activity that involves the use of ICT, it increases their motivation and, normally, they are quite independent when working online. To use Time Toast will probably enhance their digital competence at the same time reading skills.

I would set the timing for this activity inside the last fortnight of the first term, once all the didactic units have been taught. Taken advantage of this time of the year, Christmas time, I would present one of Dr. Seuss´ most famous stories, the Grinch. Even there would be a chance to watch in class one of the many movies there are about this typical Christmas character.

Next step will be search on Internet other books form this author and present the Time Toast webpage and a brief presentation of how it works.

By creating a time line using the computer class and the white board, I will illustrate my students with the main features, how to download images, how to upload them, etc. I could use the tutorial that already exists on this course.

I could predict some likely problems that it may happen in class. The main one it could be that the whole webpage/interface is in English. Even when they are used to use apps in English, they could struggle through their usage. Furthermore, there is no computer room in my school, so the learners would have to bring their own devices and not all of them have the chance to own one, therefore, collaborative work (pairs-groups of three) will be necessary in order to fix probable issues.

Another difficulty could be the time my student could spend signing up themselves, searching all those pictures, downloading all of them… so I would plan the activity for, at least, two or three sessions/classes.

Christmas is coming!!

December is almost here and we are planning to make several activities to celebrate this special time of the year. First of all, we need to get ready and learn some vocabulary related to the festivity.   Please, make sure you pronounce the words properly. If you have any question about this matter, you always can use https://www.wordreference.com/ to check the phonetics.   Moreover, we are doing a traditional letter to Santa Claus. Have you been good this last year? I´m sure you were. Remember, do not ask for much just a couple of things. You can fill the gaps in this template.      Next time we will learn some traditional carols.

Final Task

I have chosen the Edpuzzle task from Sinead´s blog https://sineadenglishteacher.blogspot.com/ , mainly for two reasons: 1.        The first one, like I already explained in the “Interaction activity”, I think Sinead writes wonderful and well redacted analysis throughout every post for each task. 2.        Among all the apps, resources and/or websites we have been taught in this course, I find Edpuzzle like the more applicable in my classes right now. It saves time, it is easy and intuitive, and students love it.

Reading Habits

Checking out my own experience as a reader, I must confess that I feel like an inconstant one. I mainly read for pleasure when I have the enough time to do it, to really enjoy it, to get the most of it. This means, long holidays or weekends when I do not have much to do (stating this at the same time than saying I´m a teacher and a father of a second grader, it implies I do not have too much time for myself). When reading in my mother tongue, I basically read novels, comics, articles from blogs or news… Reading in English is a totally different story. Normally I choose articles related to my background knowledge as well as those which match my level of language proficiency. In addition to that, I must be completely 100% focus on the task, otherwise, I lose track. Sometimes in the past, trying to go over a historic novel it became a frustrating activity due to my lack of specific knowledge of vocabulary. As a result, I gave up reading it and now I have decorating my shelves a ve...
